The tremors of the earthquake in the Bay of Bengal early Tuesday morning were felt in Kolkata, Kolaghat, Kharagpur and Kalyani Bengal to Bhubaneswar and Cuttack in Odisha, a National Center for Seismology official said citing initial feedback.

The earthquake occurred at 6:10am in the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Puri in Odisha at a depth of 91 km. The tremor was recorded at latitude 19.52 N and longitude 88.55 E, a PTI report quoted an India Meteorological Department as saying.

“The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.1 which is a strong magnitude and the area where it occurred in the Bay of Bengal is a seismic zone where reaction of tectonic plates is high; such areas are prone to earthquakes,” the seismology official told The Telegraph Online.

No major damage was reported in Bengal or Odisha, which the seismology official attributed to distance from the epicentre of the temblor.

“If we draw a hypothetical line on the Bay of Bengal then the distance from where the earthquake came to Kolkata and Bhubaneshwar would almost be the same and hence tremors were felt in both the states,” the official explained.
