Mumbai, June 18: Mamta Kulkarni, a one-time Bollywood actor, was today named by Thane police as an accused in the Rs 2,000-crore drug haul in Maharashtra this April.

Some Bollywood celebs are likely to be questioned for their links with Kulkarni and possible involvement in the drug cartel.

Over 18.5 tonnes of ephedrine, were seized from the Sholapur unit of a chemical manufacturing company on April 16, in what police say was the biggest drug racket bust ever. So far, 10 persons have been arrested in the case.

Thane police commissioner Paramvir Singh said a probe had revealed that "Mamta and her husband Vicky Goswami, an international fugitive, drug kingpin and Dawood Ibrahim loyalist, were the masterminds behind the drug racket."

The couple are based in Kenya. The police suspect Mamta is looking after her husband's drug business in India.

"She had called and conducted a meeting in Mombassa on January 8 with Morocco-based international drug mafia Abdullah. They chalked out a plan to transfer ephedrine from India to Kenya, turn it into methamphetamine and then transfer it back to India for sale," said a source in the Mumbai Narcotics Control Bureau.

Ephedrine, banned for sale in India, is widely used as an over-the-counter drug for treatment of asthma and bronchitis, police sources said. It is also used as a party drug and goes by the names of meth, glass and crystal.
