New Delhi, July 21: Delhi police tonight claimed to have busted a high-profile sex racket that was being run from an upscale apartment in Safdarjung Enclave and arrested a 62-year-old businessman.
A retired army colonel was detained following the raid last month that also led investigators to a 23-year-old Russian who the police said had been kept in the apartment against her will.
Deputy commissioner Ishwar Singh said P.N. Sanyal's arrest was just the "tip of the iceberg".
"The income tax authorities carried out search and seizure operation on June 2 at the residences of the accused, Sanyal, in Safdarjung Enclave, Vasant Kunj and Lucknow simultaneously. During the search, incriminating documents indicating his involvement in illegal activities like human trafficking and impersonation came to light," the DCP said.
Singh said the role of retired colonel Ajay Ahlawat was also being probed. "He is being questioned." Ahlawat, the officer added, was "previously involved in many cheating cases".
Sources said the search revealed copies of passports and phone numbers of foreign women. "Many fake letterheads of MPs were also recovered from the house," Singh said.
The Russian had attempted suicide by slashing her wrists and was taken to hospital by the tax authorities. Singh said the tax authorities recorded her statement. "After her statement, she was allowed to leave."
