Sunita Devi, 38, was crying inconsolably at Ghazipur on Delhi’s border with Uttar Pradesh on Sunday afternoon. Her husband had died in Bihar’s Rohtas district and she desperately wanted to return home to her children.

As Sunita begged for help, someone shot a video and uploaded on social media. She had come to Delhi for her niece’s wedding but got stuck in the lockdown. On May 14, her husband Ravindra Choudhary, who was ill for a year and a half, had died. She had been trying to return home since.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi saw the video and got his party to track her down. Youth Congress president Srinivas B.V. told this paper over the phone that they got the travel permission and arranged an SUV. “She left Delhi around 3.30pm on Monday. She will be with her family on Tuesday morning,” Srinivas added.

Sunita said over the phone: “I could not get to see my husband one last time as he was cremated on Friday, and I will repent it throughout my life. But now I will at least be with my children.”
