New Delhi, Sept. 15: Lok Janshakti Party leader Chirag Paswan today said his party had been shocked after being allotted just 40 seats in the upcoming battle for Bihar but claimed he wasn't upset, softened apparently by an assurance of "political compensation" from alliance big brother BJP.
Sources said BJP chief Amit Shah had given the assurance last night, sometime after NDA leaders had finally managed to work out a seat-share deal and held hands in a show that all was well.
According to the formula announced yesterday, the BJP would contest 160 of the 243 Assembly seats, the LJP 40, Upendra Kushwaha's RLSP 23 and former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi's Hindustani Awam Morcha 20.
Chirag, son of LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan, said media reports had claimed his party was upset.
"There is no smoke without fire. But we are not upset. We were shocked and taken aback. We have communicated our concern to Amit Shah and he has assured (us that he would) address them," he told reporters.
Party sources said the senior Paswan was indeed upset but Chirag, an MP, prevailed upon his father to calm down after the meeting with Shah.
The BJP chief, the sources said, apparently told Chirag he would be "politically compensated" and asked him to tell his father not to make a hue and cry over the seat-distribution formula.
While Shah did not clarify what he meant by "political compensation", party insiders said it could be a major share in the government if the BJP-led NDA wrested Bihar from Nitish Kumar or a berth in the central government for Chirag.
Sources said Ram Vilas, who looked glum as he sat on the dais with Shah and other NDA leaders when the alliance announced the seat-share deal yesterday, had communicated his unhappiness to the BJP leadership soon after the event at the news conference hall in the BJP headquarters got over.
The elder Paswan's complaint led to a series of meetings with senior BJP leaders who tried to pacify him. The matter was resolved after Chirag called on Shah, the sources said.
This morning, senior BJP leader Dharmendra Pradhan called on Ram Vilas to make sure the Dalit leader had been mollified. Chirag then emerged to address the media.
Chirag claimed the LJP should have got 60 seats, given the formula that had been agreed upon, based on the performance in the last Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
