Vadnagar (Gujarat): The Unjha constituency, under which Prime Minister Narendra Modi's hometown Vadnagar falls, slipped out of the BJP's hands with the Congress winning the north Gujarat seat.
The Congress's Ashaben Patel wrested the seat, falling in the Patidar-dominated Mehsana district, from the BJP's five-term MLA Narayanbhai Patel. Mehsana was the epicentre of the 2015 Patidar agitation for reservations for the Patel community.
The BJP had tried to contain the damage in Unjha, stressing that its local candidate headed the Umiya Dham temple, which the Patels revere, but it didn't work. Ashaben, who polled 81,797 votes, defeated Narayanbhai by a margin of 19,529 votes. PTI
