The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) had abused its powers and not followed due procedure in issuing notices to 127 Hyderabad residents over their Aadhaar cards, causing panic, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi alleged on Wednesday.

Owaisi asked the UIDAI, which denied the notices had anything to do with citizenship, and Telangana police to make public how many Dalits and Muslims figured on the list of 127.

The notices accuse the Aadhaar card-holders of obtaining the cards through “false pretences”.

The UIDAI has said these were issued on the basis of police reports.

Owaisi tweeted: “First, UIDAI has no power to verify citizenship. It has few powers to look into some cases of Aadhaar being granted incorrectly (rules 27 & 28),” Owaisi tweeted. “UIDAI did not follow due procedure & abused its powers. The result was panic among people.”
