New Delhi, July 5 :
Discordant notes are emanating from the Sangeet Natak Akademi in Delhi with secretary Sharbari Mukherjee filing a writ petition today in Delhi High Court challenging her dismissal by the newly-constituted Akademi board.
The 18-member board, including its chairman and vice-chairman, was constituted on May 14. It called an emergency meeting on June 22. The members unanimously decided to serve notice on Mukherjee, who was then on leave abroad. The termination letter was sent to her the next day. Mukherjee rejoined office on June 25 and the next day advertisements appeared in newspapers seeking applications for her post.
Mukherjee was a permanent employee of the Akademi but was neither chargesheeted nor issued a showcause notice. According to some board members, she was appointed secretary on probation for two years. Her probation period would have ended in December.
The step followed breakdown of communication between Mukherjee and the Akademi chairman Bhupen Hazarika, who assumed office in February. Relations soured apparently after Mukherjee?s failure to reply to one of the chairman?s letters.
It has been charged that Mukherjee took unilateral decisions relating to the issue of three CDs by a French company, the contents of which came from the Akademi?s archive. An MoU was signed with a French company, GREM. The name of the company was changed to Virgin Classics in the agreement signed during Mukherjee?s tenure. The agreement with the French company has some financial implications for the Akademi and the agreement papers were not in order.
Mukherjee declined to comment on the charges saying the case was sub judice. Hazarika has referred the matter to the Union department of culture for legal opinion.
