New Delhi: Lal Krishna Advani turned 90 on Wednesday, spending a quiet birthday on his lawns while BJP leaders elsewhere led shrill "anti-black money day" events on the first anniversary of demonetisation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the sidelined BJP veteran in the evening. "Met Advani ji and conveyed birthday greetings to him," Modi tweeted with a photo presenting the patriarch a bouquet.

Earlier in the day, Modi had tweeted birthday greetings. "Advani ji is a political stalwart, a leader who has distinguished himself through hard work and dedication towards our nation," he wrote, wishing him "good health and long life".

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and rebel JDU leader Sharad Yadav also met Advani, as did senior ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj and Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Advani had invited 90 visually challenged children as special guests. He personally served them food, ate with them and gifted them schoolbags. As old Hindi numbers played in the background, he sat quietly, accepting greetings and posing for photographs. The veteran refrained from making any comment on the political situation or demonetisation.

Advani's daughter Pratibha, who accompanied him when he visited Disneyland recently and also to Varanasi, said he spends most of his time reading and travelling. Asked what he was reading now, she replied: " Age of Anger."

Asked if he would campaign in Gujarat as he is the Gandhinagar MP, Pratibha responded with a "No" before adding: "We are happier in this world".
