Bandar (Hooghly), March 4 :     The body of the 13-year-old boy, killed in yesterday?s police firing at Khanakul, was recovered by local villagers this afternoon, even as prohibitory orders imposed on five villages in the area were enforced by contingents of RAF, EFR and state armed police. As many as 43 persons were arrested by the district police in raids conducted overnight in Bandar and the adjacent villages, where simmering tension between Trinamul and CPM supporters since February 28 resulted in a showdown with the police yesterday morning. Hooghly superintendent of police Gangeshwar Singh blamed the BJP-Trinamul combine for stoking trouble by ransacking 52 houses in Ghoradanga village on February 28. Trinamul MPs Sudip Bandopadhyay and Akbar Ali Khondekar, who reached Khanakul this morning, however, voiced protest against ?police atrocities.? Bandopadhyay said the law and order situation in West Bengal was no better than in Bihar. ?Policemen were behaving like the CPM?s Ranbir Sena,? he added. Reports that a woman had been molested by the police while conducting raids had prompted a combine of Trinamul, BJP and Congress supporters to lock up a group of policemen at the Bandar police outpost. Reinforcements first used lathis and teargas and then opened fire to disperse the supporters and free the policemen. At least 60 persons were injured in the 14 rounds that were fired and the stampede that ensued. A class VII student, Jagganath Chowdhury, was caught in the middle of the trouble. He was returning from a coaching class when a bullet fired by the police pierced his forehead just a few metres from his home. Police said villagers located his body around 12.30 pm today on the Rupnarayan river bank nearby, where it had apparently been taken by the dispersing supporters. It was sent for post mortem at the Arambagh subdivisional hospital. The villages were visited by several senior officials and politicians alike. Additional district magistrate A. Bhattacharya, additional superintendent of police Gyanwant Singh, and DIG (Burdwan range) N. Mukherjee all rushed to the spot and were keeping a strict vigil in the aftermath of the incident. Tragic silence In the wake of the firing and death of the boy, who was fondly known as Pijush, Bandar and the adjoining villages of Kaknan, Ghoradanga, Ghoshpur and Dhanyaguri have been completely enveloped by shock and grief. On hearing what had happened to her only child, Minoti Chowdhury lost her senses and jumped into a pond to commit suicide. Neighbours rescued her and she is now in a critical state at Ghatal Hospital. Pijush?s father Ashoke Chowdhury has fled the village, fearing persecution by the police. In all probability, he will not be returning to cremate his son. Recounting yesterday?s events, the boy?s aunt, Kanak, said Pijush and her son Motu were returning after tuitions. When they saw the violence, they started running towards their home when Pijush suddenly fell on the road. ?My son noticed blood on his cousin?s forehead. He thought it was a minor injury and tried to tie it with a cloth. It didn?t help in any way and Motu realised to his horror that Pijush was dead. He could not take the shock and became senseless,? Kanak said. Both were removed from the scene by the retreating supporters. Most of the villagers have fled their homes as tension and fear of further police action have gripped them. Only a few women have stayed behind. All shops by the side of of the 25-km stretch of the Arambagh-Bandar road were closed today, while the trauma of yesterday?s incident reflected on the faces of the schoolboys.
