Aurangabad: Two persons died and around 50 others, including a dozen policemen, were injured in clashes between two communities in Aurangabad city, central Maharashtra, on Friday night, police said.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Saturday evening that the situation was under control.

The district administration has clamped prohibitory orders under CrPC Section 144 and suspended Internet services.

One of the deceased was a 17-year-old youth who allegedly died in police firing while the other was a 65-year-old man who was trapped in his house when an adjoining shop was set on fire by a mob, a police officer said.

The clashes started in Moti Karanja around 10 on Friday night and spread, forcing the police to fire in the air and lob teargas shells. Mobs set fire to 100 shops and 80 vehicles, the officer said, adding that 37 people had been arrested.

According to local sources, tension had been brewing in Moti Karanja for the past few days because of a civic drive against illegal water connections. The situation worsened when one such connection at a place of worship was removed, the sources said.
