Calcutta, Feb. 7: A Class VIII student in Sonarpur was gang-raped twice on consecutive days by four youths who also clicked her pictures on a mobile to scare her into silence, police said, before the terrified teen finally told a friend about her ordeal.

Two of the youths - one a third-year BA student and the other a student of Class XII - were arrested today, more than a week after they first assaulted the girl on January 27 evening.

Police sources in Sonarpur, on Calcutta's southern fringes, said the 13-year-old, who studies in a Bengali-medium school, was on her way to tuitions less than a kilometre from her home when, according to the complaint, she was called inside a one-storey house by the youths.

Apparently, the girl knew three of the four boys as they came from the same neighbourhood and didn't suspect their intentions. The youths assaulted her before letting her go with the warning that she keep quiet.

A senior officer at Sonarpur police station said the traumatised girl did not inform her family of the assault. "The next morning, while she was going for tuitions, she was again confronted by the same set of boys who raped her again. This time they clicked her photographs with a mobile to blackmail her."

The girl kept mum for a few days but finally confided in a friend who lives in the same neighbourhood. The friend, also a teenager, told her cousin who informed the victim's family this morning.

"We came to know about the matter today and reported it to the local club. They told us to immediately inform the police. The father of one of the accused boys is a Trinamul Congress member and supplier of construction material. He offered us money to hush up the matter. But we approached the police," the girl's father said.

Acting on the complaint, the police arrested two of the youths whom they identified as Sujoy Chatterjee, 18, and Surojit Sardar, 20. Sources said the girl had apparently identified another of the accused, a minor who studies in Class X. She couldn't identify the fourth.

Police sources said the building where the girl was raped is Sujoy's house. Sujoy, son of a municipality cleaner, was apparently alone at home when he called his friends and assaulted the girl.

"Sujoy is a Class XII student of a school in the neighbourhood. Surojit is a third-year BA student. There are two other accused in the case who are absconding," said Arijit Sinha, additional superintendent (east), South 24-Parganas.

The arrested youths, who were produced in court and sent to police remand for six days, have been charged with gang rape. If convicted, they could be jailed for life.

The girl was sent for a medical examination this afternoon.
