Want to become a Vlogger? here's a t2 guide!

Nikhil Sen Published 11.12.17, 12:00 AM

If you’ve not been living under a rock, you might already be contemplating moving from smartphone clips to vlogging –– the video version of blogging. Need inspiration? YouTubers are upping their game and posting carefully-crafted, well-edited cinematic vlogs,  from exotic travels to everyday life. What connects viewers is the feeling of continuity.
t2 picks seven vloggers from across the globe you must check out.

SARA DIETSCHY

She is the type of vlogger people encounter when they normally want to learn how to be a vlogger themselves. She’s been at it since 2011 and even though she hasn’t grown as quick as some of her counterparts, she’s got a dedicated fanbase. One of her videos on ‘How to Casey Neistat a Vlog’ got her quite a bit of traction –– somewhere in excess of 800K views –– and she eventually ended up collaborating with Peter McKinnon. Quite ironically though, their joint venture was one where they iterated that 4K cameras aren’t necessary, at least for the time being, at a time when Casey Neistat had started doing so. She’s funny and does a whole lot of stuff to keep viewers engaged, ranging from tech reviews to just everyday things.

CASEY NEISTAT

The Manhattan resident’s  channel hit the roof after his video reviewing a Qatar Airways business class seat went viral. He glides across New York City on a boosted board –– a motorised skateboard –– and juggles meetings, outings with his family, seminars, A-list events, trips around the world and his favourite addiction — running. A lot of his episodes, if not most, have major sections dedicated to his daily runs, marathons and half marathons. Especially intriguing are mail-time sessions where he unboxes packages. His drone shots of the New York skyline are simply mesmerising, as are the sudden bursts of timelapse clips that switch to normal speed videos. He rarely misses an upload and his flawless editing is bound to keep you glued.

PEWDIEPIE

Felix Kjellberg, popularly known as PewDiePie, is one of the biggest draws on YouTube. What does he do in his videos you ask? He plays indie games, makes cheeky remarks and is quite the loose-lipped entertainer. He’s got enthusiasm and energy galore but that usually translates into shouting, screaming and foul-mouthed tirades. Who does he make videos for? His ‘bros’ and ‘bro army’. That’s what clicks for him but also gets him into one controversy after another. Be sure to check out his fashion and beauty vlogger girlfriend, Marzia Bisognin.

MUMBIKER NIKHIL

Nikhil Sharma, known by his vlogging name of Mumbiker Nikhil, combines love for vlogging and motorbikes in his videos. He worked as a cabin crew for Qatar Airways but took over his father’s business when he passed away.    But it wasn’t entirely smooth sailing for him. His initial videos flopped. Big time! But a video of his journey from Mumbai to Bangalore to visit a friend got 20K views in a matter of just three days. That set the ball rolling for what is now a thriving YT channel. Within six months, he went from 11K subscribers to 80K. Since then, he has been endorsed by bike companies and he reviews gear related to biking. His Kashmir to Kanyakumari trip video is also a must-watch.

LILLY SINGH
Known the world over for her YouTube channel Superwoman, which has earned over 12 million subscribers, she performs stand-up comedy, raps, hosts events and acts, and has also featured as a motivational speaker. Having joined YouTube in October 2010, Lilly Singh relies heavily on her ethnic background for her stand-up.

“I started my YouTube channel when I came out of depression. Something inside me switched and I decided I didn’t want to be sad anymore. Since then, I’ve set out to make people laugh and smile in the hope of being that switch for someone else. Also, I’m really weird and I feel the world should see it!” the Scarborough-born Lilly had told t2. The feather in her cap? She won the First Person trophy at Streamy Awards 2017.

Peter Mckinnon

This guy is all about cameras, gear and vlogging. He has a lot of expensive gear but at the same time, he doesn’t forget viewers who can’t spend big bucks. Getting smooth shots, editing tricks, storytelling ideas... he’s got it all. Apart from his vlogs, he uploads a special ‘Two minute Tuesday’ video every week in which he explains some neat tricks for shooting and editing clips. His trademark entry for every video involves clapping his hands and the line: “What’s up everybody? Peter McKinnon here.”

MONA SANGHA

Mona Sangha’s channel, KeepingUpWithMona, is one that beauty and make-up enthusiasts need to follow. To cut a long story short, she’s a make-up artist who vlogs. While make-up is her niche, there’s a ton of weddings she attends and travels occasionally to add a bit of spice to her videos.

But it’s not all fun and games –– viewers get to witness what goes on inside a typical desi home in British Columbia. Cut to the chase, she’s a beauty expert and has her clients exuding radiance by the end of the videos.
