A moment from Kaalpurush |
Satyameva Jayate
Released on: April 11
Starring: Mithun Chakraborty, Puneet Issar, Priyadarshini, Seemran, Taniya
Directed by: Milan Bhowmick
What we liked: Mithun’s angry young man attitude.
What we didn’t like: The long and preachy dialogues, lack of punch in the script.
Distributorspeak: “The film would have done much better had it not been for the IPL. The footfalls are below our expectations,” says Krishna Daga.
Premer Kahini
Released on: April 11
Starring: Koel Mullick, Dev, Ranjit Mullick
Directed by: Ravi Kinnagi
What we liked: The peppy feel, the Dev-Koel chemistry, fresh locales of Karnataka and the music.
What we didn’t like: The slow second half, tedious dialogues and Koel in tears.
Directorspeak: “The film is on its fourth week. I think what people liked about Premer Kahini is the novelty of the script and the presentation.”
Kaalpurush
Released on: April 25
Starring: Rahul Bose, Sameera Reddy, Mithun, Sudipta, Laboni
Directed by: Buddhadeb Dasgupta
What we liked: Mithun’s soul-stirring performance, Sudip Chatterjee’s camerawork and Samir Chanda’s sets.
What we didn’t like: The fact that Sameera Reddy couldn’t get her Bangali bou act right.
Distributorspeak: “The opening has been average. But word of mouth publicity will help,” says Mahendra Soni of Shree Venkatesh Films.
Lovesongs: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
Released on: February 22
Starring: Jaya Bachchan, Om Puri, Mallika Sarabhai, Shahana Chatterjee
Directed by: Jayabrato Chatterjee
What we liked: Usha Uthup’s music and Shahana’s disturbed daughter act.
What we didn’t like: Jaya Bachchan, the crawling pace and the confusing flashbacks.
Directorspeak: “Lovesongs ran for two weeks but the film would have fared better had there been more publicity. The film did better in Pune and Bangalore than in Calcutta.”
Tollywood Focus
Released on: April 4
Starring: Swastika Mukherjee, Amitabha Bhattacharya
Directed by: Manas Basu
What went wrong: The film played catch-me-if-you-can with the viewers. It was out of the theatres in a week.
Directorspeak: “Lack of hype made Tollywood Focus a disaster. The distributor Pushpa Cine Arts failed to arrange a proper release. We had thought of re-releasing the film but it didn’t work out.”
