Long-running sci-fi drama series Star Trek: Discovery will be coming to an end with its upcoming fifth season in early 2024.

Paramount+ confirmed the news by tweeting an image of the show’s lead star Sonequa Martin-Green along with statements from her and the creators, Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman. “Star Trek: Discovery The epic final season comes to @ParamountPlus in 2024,” the tweet reads.

The move comes after Paramount+’s recent announcement that another show under the Trek franchise, Star Trek: Picard, will be wrapped up with its current third season.

Launched in 2017, Star Trek: Discovery is credited with successfully launching a new era of Star Trek on streaming. The series, starring Sonequa Martin-Green, was heralded as the first Star Trek show headed by a Black female lead. It also pioneered LGBTQIA+ representation and a more serialised storytelling format for the 50-year-old franchise.

Star Trek: Discovery is the seventh Star Trek series and the first since Star Trek: Enterprise concluded in 2005. It follows the crew of the starship USS Discovery beginning a decade before Star Trek: The Original Series in the 23rd century. Its success led to a multitude of other Star Trek projects, including animated shows Lower Decks and Prodigy.

The fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery will find Captain Burnham (Martin-Green) and the crew of the USS Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy in search of an ancient power hidden for centuries. However, there are others on the hunt as well — dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.
