Gorky Sadan witnessed an evening of Russian folk songs sung to live accompaniment.

The concert was organised by the consulate of the Russian Federation in Calcutta and the Russian Center of Science and Culture. It featured the National Artist of the Russian Federation, Nadezhda Krygina, and the State Academic Russian Folk Ensemble “Russia”.

The “Russia”  folk ensemble was founded in 1977 at the initiative of the legendary singer Lyudmila Georgievna Zykina, who had been decorated with the title People’s Artist of the USSR in 1973. There is even an asteroid — 4879 Zykina — named after her.

The capacity crowd appreciated the virtuoso performance by the 55-year-old Krygina.

Alexey Idamkin, the consul general of Russia

“We were delighted to witness rapturous reactions of the Indian audience to this beautiful concert of the “Russia” folk ensemble. The event, dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries, underlines the significance of art and culture in furthering people-to-people contacts,” said Alexey Idamkin, the consul general of Russia.
