Shakespeare in Pala gaan: A bilingual production of Romeo and Juliet, directed by Mukul Ahmed (inset) of London, was recently staged at Gandhi Bhavan, Jadavpur University. Organised by the school of media communication and culture of JU and Ahmed’s theatre company Mukul and Ghetto Tigers, in collaboration with the JU Department of English, the production wove Shakespeare’s verse and Bengali poetry through pala gaan — a Bengali theatre style incorporating music, dance and storytelling. The play celebrated International Mother Language Day (February 21) and marked the beginning of the quatercentenary (400 years) of Shakespeare’s death. The UK and Bangladesh-based theatre actors Delwar Hossain Dilu, Suzanne Kendall and Rez Kabir came to Calcutta for the production and collaborated with 15 students of the university.
