Mexican hottie Salma Hayek is back in Grown Ups 2 as Adam Sandler’s “suffering” wife Roxanne. She tells t2, via video conferencing from Cancun, Mexico, why she enjoys making comedies and why she is irritated with her male co-stars!
Tell us about Grown Ups 2...
It’s a comedy spread over generations and it’s really, really funny. And there are all these conflicts... and also jokes for people of all age groups and countries.
What would you do if Adam wrote a joke that wasn’t funny?
You know, it’s an American thing because I read a lot of those jokes and I really have no idea what they are about. I say them anyway because I’m getting paid for it! And then when you get into an American theatre, everybody’s laughing.
How do you define a grown-up?
Well, I think what’s great about being an adult is to have the right balance between being responsible and a grown-up.... To keep enough of the child within you alive.
Your daughter Valentina is almost six years old. Does she influence your choice of roles?
Yeah, important question. Well, I do want to make sure that I choose parts for which she can come to the sets with me... like Grown Ups 2. She would hang out with Kevin’s (James) daughters. They’re very good friends. It’s great for her to be able to go see the movies that I make, otherwise it’s like: ‘Mama goes to work, she makes movies, but I’m not allowed to watch any of them.’ She tends to be really suspicious of those films.
Adam Sandler, Kevin James, David Spade and Chris Rock are all such good friends. Did the boys pester you on the sets?
Oh, every day. Like brothers, they were irritating but you cannot help but adore them. That’s the fun of a film like this. I also had my team of girls. Maria (Bello) and Maya (Rudolph) are good friends. So we got together and teased them a bit and had fun fights.
In the film, Adam and your character relocate to get away to be close to nature. What do you prefer personally?
I like small towns. Yeah, I always go back to nature and the countryside. I live in a big city but I always try to get away on weekends.
What do you enjoy most about making comedies?
I like to know that I’m doing something that is going to make people laugh and forget about their problems. I like to come to the set and not have to torture myself... like trying to get into an act where somebody is going to die or I’m about to die! I like to do drama but I don’t want to only do those movies in which I have to go to some dark place. I like to have fun on the sets. Though I have to tell you that the sets of some comedies can be quite nightmarish. That’s why I like to work with these guys and with Adam. It’s a lovely environment and life is too short.
