If the family that prays together, stays together, what about the family that sings together? After witnessing spouses, siblings and friends match their vocal chords on many a reality show, it is now the turn of families to sing their way to the big league. Waar Parriwar — Sangeet Ka Naya Gharana (starting April 28, Monday to Wednesday at 8pm on Sony) brings together 12 musical families on the same stage, with members of each family collectively vying to prove their musical mettle.
“Waar Parriwar is an effort to provide a common platform to families who are bound together by their collective passion for music. Alongside their children, even parents can now realise their dreams of making it big in the world of music. The show provides the unique opportunity for a father to sing alongside his daughter or for an uncle and nephew to collaborate on a duet,” producer-director Gajendrra Singh tells t2 from Mumbai. Drawn from across the country, Waar Parriwar boasts of an eclectic mix of participants with the Rathod family from Jaipur competing against the Ali brothers from Kanpur and the Chaturvedis from Amritsar matching their skills with the Moyals of Ujjain.

“As far as music and singing is concerned, every family on Waar Parriwar is well known in the town or city they hail from. That contributes considerably to the quality of the show,” says Gajendrra Singh, the man behind programmes like Antakshari, Sa Re Ga Ma and Voice of India.
Though the families all have musical skills, there will also be trainers to guide them. “The brother-sister duo of Usha and Hridaynath Mangeshkar are the resident gurus on Waar Parriwar. Hailing from India’s first family of music, it is a great honour to have them on the show,” says Singh. Music director Ismail Darbar and his wife Ayesha will be the judges on the show.
Waar Parriwar has also managed a coup of sorts by roping in actor Urmila Matondkar as anchor. “Urmila is extremely well versed in music and has even sung a song with Asha Bhonsle. Having her on board definitely helps the show score big,” says Singh.
