David Beckham is the subject of a documentary series on Netflix that will explore the football icon’s humble working-class beginnings in London and meteoric rise to becoming one of the most recognised – and scrutinised – athletes of his generation.
Netflix confirmed the news on Twitter and wrote, “David Beckham will be the subject of a new multi-part docuseries. Beckham and his family will sit for interviews — as well as share personal footage from their lives — to fully tell the story of how he became one of the most recognizable athletes of all time.”
According to the OTT platform, the series will feature a mix of never-seen-before personal archive footage from the last 40 years and interviews with Beckham, his family and friends, as well as key figures who have been part of his journey both on and off the field.
The documentary will be helmed by a pair of Academy Award winners. Fisher Stevens, known for directing Palmer, And We Go Green and The Cove, will direct and serve as executive producer alongside John Battsek, known for One Day in September, Winter on Fire and Searching for Sugar Man.
The non-fiction series is being produced by Beckham’s own 99 Studios, in association with Ventureland and with Stevens and Battsek.
According to reports, alongside the success of Beckham and his family, the project may even delve into some of the controversies and alleged extramarital affairs.
The creative team for the project also comprises editors Chris King, known for Senna and Amy, and Bjorn Johnson of Don’t F**k With Cats and Bad Sport fame. Tim Cragg, the cinematographer for Three Identical Strangers and Billie, is also part of the project.
The 47-year-old English former professional footballer is the co-owner of two football clubs, Inter Miami CF and Salford City. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star has been married to former Spice Girls singer and fashion designer Victoria Beckham since 1999. They have four children.
