Despite a thanda 2007 (Salaam-e-Ishq and a forgettable Big Brother), vivacious Priyanka Chopra is unarguably one of the most sought-after actresses in Bollywood today. She is upbeat, especially about Love Story 2050, co-starring Harman Baweja. The effervescent star waxes eloquent about her reel life love story.
You have become quite the galaxy-gal. You were the heroine of Krrish, which had special effects galore and now you’re in the futuristic Love Story 2050.
Krrish was one of its kind because Krrish was India’s first superhero. Of course, it was a sci-fi film but it was more about the superhero; whereas in Love Story 2050, we have recreated the world of 2050 from scratch. We have not seen before the kind of special effects that are there in this film.
What is the film’s plotline?
It’s about a normal guy being transported into the future. I am definitely lucky to have been a part of this film.
Why?
Love Story 2050 can definitely be called India’s first sci-fi film because a futuristic sci-fi film on this scale has never been done in our cinema. The film is set in the present and the future... so I think people are going to enjoy watching it a lot.
Do you have a challenging role in the film or does it belong to Harman totally?
It gives a lot of scope to Harman, and to me too. I am playing a double role for the first time in my career. It was very difficult playing two different characters. One of my characters is in the present and the other is in the future. (Excitedly) The hair colour of my second character is red and when we were shooting for those sequences, I had to stay at home for two months because of my hair. I hope people like both my characters.
Was it easier to do a film with Harman, considering you are very good friends?
I did the film because I liked the script. And for a movie to do well, it is important for an actor to be friendly with their co-stars. When good friends work together, the movie works out well.
What makes Love Story 2050 special? Is it because it’s Harman's debut film?

This film is special because a lot of hard work, a lot of effort has gone into making this film. Everybody has put in so much of time and money.
So, do you think Harman is going to be the next superstar?
Well you are going to see him on screen in two or three months. Career-wise, I’m his senior. But Harman knows much more about cinema than I do. I think Harman is a fantastic actor. Considering that this is his first film, he is very confident. He is a good dancer, and a good actor. But the audience will have to rate the rest. I cannot do that.
Was it difficult to act in a film set in a distant time frame (2050)?
Yes. When you make a historical or a film based on the not-so-distant past, it is comparatively easier to make than a futuristic film. That is because films based on the past have a reference point. There is information about that particular era given in history books and you know that that such-and-such things happened. You know the way people lived their lives at that time. But the future is a different story. It is very difficult to recreate. In the end, it is your creativity which counts and Love Story 2050 is (director) Harry Bawejaji’s vision. This is the way he thought the future would be and that’s the way we have tried to portray it. We have worked really hard on it.
You sound rather emotional about Love Story 2050.
(Laughs) I generally have a lot to say about anything and everything but with this film I am speechless. Where do I start? The film is called Love Story and that’s what we are trying to show — the theme is that love breaks all barriers; when love is eternal, even God has to break his rules.
Looks like you have pinned your hopes on the film...
Love Story 2050 will definitely be a benchmark because this is a unique film. It’s a first of its kind. Now many science fiction films are being made and I hope with the other films, they just become better and better because Indian cinema is becoming massive worldwide now. For me, Love Story is a very, very special film.
