Graphic art at CIMA

Artist: Sonal Varshneya  Title: Photoshoot (etching) What appealed to Suman: I don’t know whether to call this woman a human or a Goddess. Although she seems to be the same person, if we look at her separately they are all different. Be it in her posture or her appearance, she is different in every frame, probably the reason why it’s titled Photoshoot, where each shot brings out a new pose and a distinct side of the same person.

What appealed to Suman: I don’t know whether to call this woman a human or a Goddess. Although she seems to be the same person, if we look at her separately they are all different. Artist: Sheikh Gul Mohammad
Title: Younger Sister (lithography)
What appealed to Suman: This one seems to have a mythological implication with an African art feel. The geometrical synergy of the images is broken by the text of a language unknown to me.

I had a fascinating experience visiting the art works that were on display. The ingenuity of the process of creating the artworks was amazing. It is indeed a great initiative by CIMA to honour such art from across the country
Suman Ghosh, Miami-based professor of economics and a Tollywood filmmaker

Artist: Jyotirmay Dalapati
Title: Rural to Urbanisation (etching)
What appealed to Suman: There are many layers to graphic art, which is visible in this piece. I like the interesting juxtaposition of animate with inanimate objects such as a caterpillar on a cellphone, a toaster with a lizard peeping out. It creates a wholesome effect and I find that fascinating.

Artist: Chetan Navasha Raut
Title: Afterlife (etching)
What appealed to Suman: The abstractness of the carcass of a bird which is morbid contrary to the image of a bird in flight makes for a unique combination. I find this piece imaginative in a very non-standard way.

Artist: Rajesh Kumar Singh
Title: Ramayana In My Life (etching with dry point)
What appealed to Suman: I see the artist himself in this piece of work and how the Ramayana has had an internal influence on him. Also how his own image is enmeshed in the tale. The line of etched faces seems to me the many faces from the Ramayana that could also be the many faces of the artist.

What is graphic art?
A form of art expression different from photo offset prints. Graphic images are made usually on paper with an emphasis on lines, marks or printed letters instead of colour. The print is taken from an engraved metal plate, woodblock or lithographic stone with etching done by the artist. The artists number their graphic print, usually below the image where 3/10 would mean that it is the third print of 10 copies. The closer to 1/10, the higher the value.

Graphic works from the CIMA Awards Show will be on display from March 14 to 22 at Academy of Fine Arts (2 Cathedral Road) and from March 23 to April 12 at Ramdulari Park (13/1 Ballygunge Park Road)
