Sonam Kapoor and brother Harshvardhan Kapoor will clash at the box office on June 1 since his Bhavesh Joshi has been pushed to that day.
Newlywed Sonam’s Veere Di Wedding — co-starring the veeres (friends) Kareena Kapoor Khan, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania — is also releasing on June 1. Makers of the superhero-vigilante film Bhavesh Joshi believe June 1 is a better date than May 25 — the earlier date for the film — from the point of view of distribution.
They feel a June 1 release averts a clash with Deadpool 2 (also a super hero film) and think Bhavesh will get better and more shows if it releases on June 1. It also helps that the Indian Premier League’s current season ends on May 27.
The trade buzz is also that it won’t really matter if Veere Di Wedding and Bhavesh Joshi release the same day, as the genres of the films are different.
Distributor and trade analyst Girish Wankhede, however, said: “The makers of Bhavesh Joshi should delay the release as Veere Di Wedding is carrying a very huge buzz and Harshvardhan’s film will not get noticed. Besides it looks like a film that will take time to pick up at the box office, provided the content is good.”
Exhibitor and distributor Rajesh Thadani feels the reason Harshvardhan’s second film, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, was moved to June 1 could have been buzz about the release of John Abraham’s Parmanu. “The Hollywood release Deadpool 2 (releasing this Friday) will be in its second week by then and that could be another reason that the film may not be getting good shows. But releasing it in the week of Veere Di Wedding is also a bad idea,” Thadani said.
Sibling clash at the theatres has been avoided in the recent past — like Daawat-e-Ishq and Mary Kom starring Parineeti Chopra and Priyanka Chopra respectively in 2014.
The makers of Daawat-e-Ishq finally changed the release date to avoid clashing with the actress’s cousin at the box office.
