Hrithik Roshan as Vijay Dinanath Chauhan
The brief from the director (Karan Malhotra) was that Hrithik has to look simple so that the intensity of the film, the emotions and the dialogues are done justice to. So we stuck to shirt and jeans. It’s simple, basic and stylish enough but not overpowering. It’s not in-your-face.
Then we discussed whether we wanted to give him checks or any of that. Finally, we zeroed in on plain, full-length shirts made of cotton and linen — as basic as it can get. Basically, what you end up doing then is focusing on Vijay’s emotions, his mission and what he has set out for. The shirts have been dyed in neutral shades as per the requirement.
Hrithik as Vijay also wears Pathanis, depending on the scenes. You will see him in Pathani kurtas with salwars and also in kurta-churidar. In the (Deva) Shree Ganesha song, he wears this orange, raw silk kurta with a churidar and in another scene, you will see him in a green raw silk Pathani with a neutral-coloured salwar.

We have kept it basic, without making it look boring of course. It is pretty much what the director wanted. It is a very dark film… heavy drama. Patterns or prints would disturb that. A self-on-self is still fine, like a self-weave or a self-textured fabric.
Hrithik immerses himself in the character. He has his inputs. His comfort matters, but he never gets into your creative space. He understands the script. We had meetings where he heard us out. And he would always stress: “I require this kind of comfort”. So, if we gave him Kolhapuri chappals, we had them made as per his comfort.
Hrithik is a very good-looking boy! I am sure it is every designer’s dream to work for him. He looks very nice in the (Deva) Shree Ganesha song in that orange raw silk kurta. That’s really, really nice. He’s also looking gorgeous in that green Pathani! Even in banyan and jeans he looks amazing! And those are your regular banyans!
Does Hrithik look hottest in banyan and jeans?

Priyanka Chopra as Kali
She plays a Maharashtrian girl and we have taken a few cinematic liberties to make her look as glamorous as we could within the realm of the film. I couldn’t have taken it beyond this. When it is a Rs 70 crore commercial film, you cannot make it like a documentary!
Priyanka’s silhouette is ghagra-choli and dupatta and she wears a sari as and when required. It’s simple but interesting. We have played with simple ghagras — chanderi, silk woven or block-printed and the cholis are either patchworked or they have phulkari or bandhni work. We’ve used very interesting blouses and simple dupattas with simple finishing like a piping. Priyanka also wears a tabeez on her arm that gives her a very earthy look.
We had discussions and if it meant changing something, Priyanka gave it a lot of thought. She is lovely! She always has her inputs and is involved enough to make your work better!
My favourite look of Priyanka is her introductory scene. She is also looking nice in a pink ghagra in the (Deva) Shree Ganesha song.

Rishi Kapoor as Rauf Lala
He plays a butcher or a kasai. And he is a Muslim. We have given him these lungi-kurtas. Apart from that he is wearing Pathanis which were made to order from Mohammed Ali Road and Bhendi Bazaar, typically Muslim areas in Bombay where the common man goes to get his Pathanis made. The film breaks into two eras — the 1970s and the ’90s. Later on, he wears these Pathanis made of matka fabric that show his growth as a character.
