1 DANGAL
Domestic box office: Rs 340 crore — and counting.
Records set and broken: Highest Sunday collection (Rs 39 crore), fastest to enter Rs 300-crore club (13 days).
Aamir Khan’s film opened big and has remained huge, smashing records left, right and centre. The film that works on many levels — sports saga, family film, father-daughter watch, inspirational story, patriotic power… — has struck a chord worldwide, with many trooping in for a repeat watch. Dangal, that’s now eyeing Rs 400 crore, has re-established Aamir’s dominance over the box office, making him Bolly’s hero no 1.

2 PK
Domestic box office: Rs 337 crore
Records set and broken: First Bolly film in the Rs 300-crore club, first film to earn Rs 700 crore-plus worldwide.
Aamir as an alien. Rajkumar Hirani’s mirth-meets-message template. An A+ act from Anushka Sharma. PK was a winner from the get go, with the Aamir-Hirani combo creating box-office magic once more after 3 Idiots.

3 BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN
Domestic box office: Rs 320 crore
Records set and broken: Most watched Bolly film on TV (15.5 TVR)
The heartwarming story of an Indian man who pulls out all the stops to help a six-year-old girl reach her home in Pakistan brought on a smile even as it teased tear ducts. Salman shone in his most honest turn yet, with pocket dynamite Harshaali Malhotra giving this Kabir Khan film its awwwwww factor.

4 SULTAN
Domestic box office: Rs 300 crore
Records set and broken: Biggest opener in 2016 (Rs 36.54 crore)
Like Aamir in Dangal, Salman buffed up big time and stepped into the akhara to play a down-and-out wrestler who scripts a hell of a comeback story. Praise poured in for Salman and Anushka Sharma’s performances, even as Sultan scored on many counts — action to story to music.

5 DHOOM:3
Domestic box office: Rs 260 crore
With Aamir playing the villain, the action franchise was a winner even before release. Dhoom: 3 got off to a massive start, with AK in a double role — in what is surely his weakest film in recent times — ensuring that many die-hard fans walked in for a double... watch. D:3 set and broke many BO records — till Aamir’s own PK smashed them all.

6 CHENNAI EXPRESS
Domestic box office: Rs 208 crore
Records set and broken: Released at highest number of screens (3,700), highest paid previews (Rs 6.75 crore)
Shah Rukh Khan’s only film in the Rs 200-crore club was an action-romance with liberal doses of Rohit Shetty-styled humour. SRK the romantic hero scored and so did Deepika Padukone and her “bokwaas dictionary”.

7 PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO
Domestic box office: Rs 206 crore
Records set and broken: Second-highest opener ever (Rs 40.35 crore)
After the blockbuster success of Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Salman went back to the basics, coming up with this family film helmed by his Maine Pyar Kiya director Sooraj Barjatya. Salman as Prem spelt box-office jackpot, with his chemistry with Sonam Kapoor scoring over an otherwise daft and dull plot.

8 3 IDIOTS
Domestic box office: Rs 202 crore
Records set and broken: First film in the Rs 200-crore club
This Raju Hirani film about following one’s heart and pursuing excellence instead of hankering after academic success was a blockbuster on release. 3 Idiots — with Aamir as Rancho leading from the front — endures, proving to be a must-watch every time it’s on TV. #friendshipgoals #lifegoals
