Surojit Chatterjee takes off his spectacles, tucks a black shirt in and slips into a long patchwork Agnimitra Paul jacket, all things that you don’t usually associate the singer, songwriter and composer with. This is the first time that the Bhoomi man is actually “planning” a look, something that will reflect his personality, for his album launch today evening — the second one from his one-year-old band Surojit O Bondhura, titled Abhyontorin (inner self). Surojit will also perform.

“This is a lot like the patchwork jacket that the bauls wear and I was gifted one by a baul. For my last album cover (Surojit O Bondhura), I had posed in that. This jacket is a wonderful fusion of something like that and designerwear. It looks royal too. Probably Agnimitra knows the kind of music I am associated with… folk fusion. I am very happy with it,” he smiles at the fittings at Agni’s Palit Street studio on Thursday afternoon.

The designer says she is looking for a style that is signature yet not OTT. “We did not want a Daler Mehndi look,” she laughs. Agni has teamed the old Benarasi fabric, raw silk and silk patchwork jacket with a black shirt and black jeans, which she feels would look perfect on the stage.

“White would have looked too stark and red too feminine,” she says. Though Surojit and his wife Kamalini went hunting for a black T-shirt that was originally in the scheme of things, a full-sleeved one with a Chinese collar was difficult to spot. “We got it stitched,” says Agni. She is also toying with te idea of giving his hair a makeover. A bandana? “No, no, I am not comfortable!” protests Surojit, who normally wears his hair in a ponytail. “Okay, let’s try a bun,” says Agni. How about chopping it off? “I dare not!” she laughs.

But she has convinced Surojit into tucking his shirt in, something that the singer has never tried. Surojit and Agni are also in talks about creating a wardrobe of long jackets in Indian textiles like ikat and Baluchari for his upcoming shows abroad.

Abhyontorin has seven tracks including an instrumental number. Kamalini has penned the title song. The rest are written and composed by Surojit. “The overall sound of the album is acoustic. This is the sound that I am enjoying right now,” he wraps up. Dress rehearsals over, rehearsals Surojit is more familiar with beckon. t2 says all the best!
