BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR
The winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2013 was celebrated as a “same-sex, coming-of-age” film with a number of sex scenes consuming several minutes of its three-hour running time. The longest was a seven-minute romp — described by The Daily Telegraph as “a gasping seven minutes of fleshy abandon” — in which the women, Adele Exarchopoulos and Lea Seydoux, have sex for the first time, giving us a graphic encounter filled with slapping and sweating, writhing and orgasmic moaning.
LAST TANGO IN PARIS
Bernardo Bertolucci admitted that the sex scenes in his film — more violent than tender — were a depiction of his own sexual fantasies. The longest and most pronounced was the anal sex scene between Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider variously described over the years as “the greatest” to the “most disturbing”.
IRREVERSIBLE
The 2002 French thriller is infamous for its dime-a-dozen sex scenes, but the most graphic and almost unnerving was the 10-minute rape scene of Alex (Monica Bellucci) in a dark alley, filmed as a single shot where the camera rarely wavered.
EYES WIDE SHUT
Stanley Kubrick brought together (then) married couple Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in this film about fidelity, sex and marriage. Among the lovemaking scenes, Cruise’s fantasy of Kidman making out with another man was graphic. And that journey Cruise undertakes through New York’s seedy underbelly before landing up at a mansion where masked orgies are taking place, makes quite an impression.
ANTICHRIST
Random acts of sex and violence define this Lars von Trier film that ran into controversy the moment it was released. Packed with graphic lovemaking moments, Antichrist starts with a close-up explicit sex scene of He (Willem Dafoe) and She (Charlotte Gainsbourg) making violent love as their son falls to his death. And that's only the beginning. Yes, there’s even genital mutilation in a scene that’s as long as it is disturbing.
KAMASUTRA
‘A Tale of Love’ it called itself, but Mira Nair’s Kama Sutra was a lust fest that involved prolonged sex scenes. Described by Variety as “a hard-sell of sex and exoticism”, Kamasutra had a number of steamy scenes, including a particularly languid lesbian act running into several minutes.
Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN
There’s a lot of sex in Gravity man Alfonso Cuaron’s breakthrough film. The story of two best friends who embark on a road trip, meet an older woman on the way and end up having sex with her, without the other knowing, has lots of sex. The scene that remains entrenched in our minds: the menage a trios where the two men end up kissing each other passionately.
9 1/2 WEEKS
Considered the precursor to Fifty Shades of Grey, this Mickey Rourke-Kim Basinger romp has a series of bests: Best Sex Scene in the Rain (touching, kissing, necking in the alley), Best Striptease (she takes off her clothes one by one behind the blinds as he stares on), Best Food Sex Scene (he raids the refrigerator to place everything from sugar-sweet maraschino cherries to spicy jalapenos on her tongue. And then comes the most potent aphrodisiac: honey)
FIFTY SHADES: WHAT THE WORLD WON’T GET TO SEE
* While the sex scenes roughly made up 35 to 40 per cent of the EL James mommy porn book-to-film, 20 minutes of sex in 100 minutes means that Fifty Shades the film falls short of director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s initial promise of a 50:50 share.
* Any scene from the book involving “visible male genitalia” will not find a place in the film. “You want to appeal to as wide an audience as possible without grossing them out. You don’t want to make something gratuitous, and ugly, and graphic,” is the reason given by Jamie Dornan who plays the sexually kinky protagonist Christian Grey.
* The tampon scene in which Grey forcibly removes Ana’s tampon as a form of foreplay will not be there.
