nDelhi?s India Gate or Mumbai?s Gateway of India would be no patch on it. Calcutta Gate will be a towering showpiece that will welcome visitors to the city on their way from the airport. It will be a proud symbol of its resurgence. All that Calcuttans have to do to get the Gate is vote Subrata Mukherjee for mayor once more. Dreamgate could clinch that. Importantly, elections to the Calcutta municipal corporation in the next few weeks will revolve solely around him. And why not? Everyone gives Mukherjee credit for so many things ? widening roads, improving water supply, raising revenue and above all, getting time-bound work from a notoriously sluggish workforce.

The CPM may point to a helping hand from Writers? Buildings and the ADB. But Mukherjee, no doubt, has stolen the show.
