After spending four years and four months as a castaway on an uninhabited island called “Mas a Tierra”, a Scottish sailor named Alexander Selkirk was rescued on February 2, 1709. It is popularly believed that Selkirk’s travails provided the inspiration for Daniel Defoe’s classic novel Robinson Crusoe. In fact, in 1966, the Chilean government renamed the island as Robinson Crusoe Island. Incidentally, Selkirk has been immortalised in William Cowper’s poem ‘The Solitude of Alexander Selkirk’ which gives us the well-known phrase: ‘I am monarch of all I survey’
