Siddhartha Basu was the country’s first ‘television quizmaster’ with Quiz Time on Doordarshan in the 1980s. In the mid 1990s, as satellite television grew, this columnist had the privilege (and luck?) of hosting the Bournvita Quiz Contest. Till 2000, these and all other quiz shows were seen as niche programmes attracting a loyal viewership but could never deliver TRPs (Television Rating Points) like, say, a soap or a film-based show. The Big B changed all that. Suddenly, being a ‘Quizmaster’ was not such an odd word on a CV. Now we have Saurav Ganguly doing a wonderful job on the Bengali version of Kaun Banega Crorepati. Who is next? The more the merrier.
