Padma Lakshmi has issued a statement against diet, inspired by her daughter. The 47-year-old Top Chef star has said she will stop worrying about how she will fit into the size zero red carpet dress, because such angst was proving harmful to her daughter’s health.

In a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter, she writes that she found herself in “the unique position of eating for a living while still being expected to look a certain way… let’s call it ‘red carpet ready’.” She dieted fiercely to get rid of the calories that she consumed for the show. “It’s like a poem,” she writes, “no meat, no wheat, no cheese, no fried foods or sweets. And, of course, no alcohol.”

Padma feels that she is expected to be thin, but her vanity is also responsible. “I want to look good, to be fit and to fit into those fancy couture dresses,” she writes.

But she noticed that her seven-year-old daughter Krishna was imitating everything that she was doing. Krishna was telling people around her that she didn’t want to eat because she was “watching her figure”, or that she weighed too much. “Her comments stopped me dead in my tracks. Her words scared me. Language matters. We send signals to our daughters every day. And I am her first touchstone of femininity,” she writes.

“Every message I telegraph about food and our bodies is important,” she adds. Therefore, her weight will not be her focus. If she needs a bigger dress, so be it. As long as her daughter does not measure her worth by her dress size.
