Joining Doon School in Dehradun when I was 15 years old proved to be the first major turning point of my life. Staying in a boarding school, away from home, at that age taught me a lot. I not only learnt to fend for myself but it also gave me a sense of individuality and confidence.

Another turning point and learning experience was moving to London to study fashion at the American College of Applied Arts. It was an eye-opener for me as I met people from different nationalities and cultures. It opened up my mind and I became receptive to new things and ideas. I learnt a lot about people, their cultures and fashions and I think all that has stayed with me.

Becoming a father at the age of 27 too was life-changing. Fatherhood at a young age made me more responsible as a person and I learnt a lot about protecting and taking care of my child. Today, when I’m in my 40s, my daughter is 16 years old and we share a great relationship. When I look back, I feel glad that I became father at a young age — this helped me grow into a better human being.

A big professional turning point for me was launching my second label — the Kingfisher Line in conjunction with the UB Group in 1995. Launching a garment line for a corporate was an unusual experience for me as a designer. It was a new concept and something hardly any other designers were doing then. This tie-up has made work more challenging and exciting for me. Recently, it was a fun experience designing the outfits for the Force India girls for the Formula One event in India. I have always enjoyed all the challenging projects that have come my way.
