Calcutta, June 20 :    Calcutta, June 20:  CESC Ltd has decided to set up a transmission line by investing around Rs 50 crore to bring power from its 240 MW Titagarh power station to Mulajore as a step towards closing its Mulajore unit. The RPG group power utility has, however, decided against closing its New Cossipore plant. The West Bengal government had linked the clearance to the Balagarh Thermal Power project with the closure of both the old power stations?New Cossipore and Mulajore. A core team has been working on a plan since September last. The 60 MW Mulajore plant?s off-peak generation has been slashed to 10 MW to minimise the impact of running this uneconomical unit on CESC?s overall efficiency. The plant can generate only half of its capacity during peak hours while peak-time generation at New Cossipore has touched 115 MW. The 1,150-strong workforce at Mulajore has been pared to less than 900. A redeployment programme is now being hinted at. However, no clear information was available on CESC?s plans. The local demand at Mulajore is about 95 MW, of which 50 MW is currently supplied from Titagarh through the existing linkage. CESC has decided to set up a new transmission line taking into account the grid organisation, its ability to accommodate extra demand created in Mulajore post-closure and the alternative power source to reach electricity there. With the state not having fixed any definite time frame within which the power utility ought to close the units, CESC was free to synchronise the closure after its power availability increases and a employee redeployment plan is finalised.
