Muzaffarpur, Jan. 15: Khudiram Bose Central Jail authorities would ensure that the inmates could soon watch programmes on yoga and religion on television.

According to sources in the jail, the administration will start the sessions from March. The objective is to reform the prisoners.

The programmes would be transmitted through high frequency dish TVs and transmitters and the sessions would be held every morning.

The decisions were taken after Muzaffarpur district magistrate Santosh Kumar Mall recently made a daylong inspection of the jail following chief minister Nitish Kumar’s directives. The sources said Nitish had asked Mall to regularly visit the jail and listen to the complaints and grievances of the undertrials and prisoners.

The district magistrate said a host of inmates had virtually mobbed him, seeking transmission of channels beaming religious and spiritual programmes inside the jail.

“The prisoners and the undertrials expressed their desire to know more about religious discourses and spiritualism. Some of the undertrials even said they did not want to watch entertainment programmes only,” Mall told The Telegraph.

He has also written a letter to inspector-general (prisons) Anand Kishore, asking the latter to explore possibilities for setting up a high frequency satellite dish antenna on the jail premises.

The jail authorities had installed several television sets and got cable connections in all the wards. The cable operator, however, did not have the channels showing religious programmes in the bouquet that was provided to the jail, the sources added.
