The state BJP unit is going the extra mile to promote International Yoga Day scheduled on June 21.

The party's national president, Amit Shah, would perform yoga asanas with students, working professionals and senior citizens at Moin-ul-Haq stadium on that day.

Shah would reach Patna on Saturday evening and take part in a yoga camp from 6.30am to 8.30am the next day. Along with Shah, senior BJP leaders from state and local representatives from Patanjali Yogpeeth (Baba Ramdev's flagship project), Art of Living, Gayatri Parivar and other organisations would take part at the camp at Moinul Haq Stadium.

Cadres from Patna have started an awareness campaign visiting parks and open grounds creating awareness about yoga. As part of the campaign, BJP MLA from Bankipore, Nitin Navin, on Sunday visited several parks and urged youngsters to take part in the camp.

Nitin told The Telegraph: "Today (Sunday), I led a delegation to several parks, including Krishna Nagar Park (Kidwaipuri), and in the Yarpur area in the morning, urging people to participate at camps."

He also distributed pamphlets on benefits of yoga. BJP state general secretary Sanjeev Chaurasia also undertook yoga awareness campaigns at Shastri Nagar Park and others public places.

The United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as International Day of Yoga following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for the 6,000-year-old Indian practice for the well being of the mind and body in his address to the UN on September 27 last year.

On Saturday, chief minister Nitish Kumar took a potshot at Amit Shah, urging him to practise it at home. Reacting to Nitish's statement, minister of state for petroleum and natural gas Dharmendra Pradhan (also the newly appointed election co-in-charge for Bihar in Patna) said: "Nitish should focus of his own health and not worry about Amit Shah."

Yoga camps would also be held at various parks and educational institutions. The University Grants Commission has written a letter to all central universities and non-central universities to adopt various activities on June 21.

The UGC directive for participation in yoga camps is on a voluntary basis. The directive states that willing students and faculties of the universities may practise yoga as shown by practitioners. The best participants would be awarded prizes and certificates. An online essay competition would also be organised.

The Central University of South Bihar would conduct yoga session at the varsity campus from 7am to 8am. Varsity public relations officer Mohammed Mudassir Alam said: "We are expecting a turnout of around 100 students, faculty members and officials at the camp though summer vacation is on."
