A woman allegedly strangled her physically challenged husband to death on Monday night.

Rabri Kumari, 26, was later arrested and sent to jail.

Rabri, who tied the nuptial knots with 28-year-old Roshan Kumar in May this year, also admitted that she wanted to come out of the marriage.

"Rabri is a resident of the Pandarak in rural Patna and was staying at her husband's place at Road No. 5 of the Ashok Nagar locality. The woman has been sent to jail and during interrogation revealed that she was married forcefully to Roshan, who is hearing and speech impaired. She had come to stay with him three days back. On Tuesday morning, Roshan's parents knocked on the door of the room where the couple had slept many times but it did not open. The door was forcibly opened and the body of Roshan was found with blood oozing out of his mouth. His wife was seen sitting in one corner of the room. The family then informed officers of Kankerbagh police station," deputy superintendent of police (sadar) Ramakant Prasad told The Telegraph.

The officer added that the body had been sent for post-mortem. The police also found finger marks on Roshan's neck. "The police came to know from the family members that both of them had constant fights and that Rabri never really stayed in Roshan's house. The man used to do some odd jobs. It seems that the lady strangulated him with a pillow to death. Roshan was in deep sleep and used to take time to get active after waking up. It seems that he could not react to the sudden attack by his wife. When questioned, she sounded blank and said that she did not have an idea about anything. She has been sent to jail," the officer added.

The incident is not an exception as recently several cases of husband beating have been reported in the last few weeks. On July 30, Roopam, a middle-aged woman, had attacked her husband Vikram Kumar, with a knife on one of his eyes, after he had reacted to her alleged extra-marital affair.

The incident had taken place in Hanuman Nagar under the Patrakar Nagar police station area. "He could have lost an eye but was fortunate. The man had gone to the senior superintendent of police's office with a complaint and based on the same, the woman was arrested," said an officer of the police station.

On Tuesday, senior superintendent of police Vikas Vaibhav, during his interaction with people, came across two complaints in which the husbands were being troubled and harassed by their wives. "One person hailed from the Alamganj police station of Patna. He came with his mother and said his wife was always quarrelling with him and he was being harassed a lot. He added that every day, his wife created a scene in front of the neighbours. The matter has been reverted to the Alamganj police station for an investigation. Another man, whose son is seriously sick, had come to us stating that his (son's) wife had lodged a dowry case against his son who is sick with a damaged kidney and is admitted to a hospital in a serious condition. Both these matters are related to the Patna City area," an officer at Vaibhav's office said.

Vaibhav said: "There are quite a few cases like these which come to us every now and then. The matters are investigated and those found guilty are taken to task as per the law."

Spousal violence - not just atrocities against women for dowry - has been on the rise in the state and across he country.

A law practitioner on condition of anonymity said: "India still does not have a law protecting a man from his wife's torture - mental and physical. But such cases are on the rise. The lawmakers might one day need to frame certain guidelines to protect men in the families, too. Victims of domestic violence are not necessarily women anymore but its effect is found across genders."
