Patna, Jan. 31: The government will set up vigilance committees to monitor the implementation of the state food security scheme to be launched from tomorrow.

The scheme is aimed at providing people subsidised staple foodgrain. The cabinet, in a meeting chaired by chief minister Nitish Kumar, approved the food and consumer protection department’s proposal.

Brajesh Mehrotra, principal secretary, cabinet coordination, said the committees would be formed at the levels of state, districts, blocks, urban local bodies and panchayats. These would help the administration keep tabs on the distribution of foodgrain and ensure transparency in the delivery system through public distribution shops.

The cabinet also approved the formation of a directorate to verify caste certificates issued to people from extremely backward, backward and other backward sections. The general administration department submitted the proposal.
