Chhapra, March 6: Taking a leaf out of Patna and Magadh universities, Jai Prakash University in the town will hold its first students’ union elections in April.

The varsity’s statutory committee on Tuesday decided to hold the elections according to the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations on April 18, said dean, students’ welfare, B.N. Yadav.

While Patna University and Magadh University conducted its students’ union elections recently after 28 and 32 years respectively, the 23-year-old Chhapra varsity will hold the elections for the first time.

The students’ union poll will be conducted on three levels — college, postgraduate and university — where students and research scholars would elect their representatives. The committee, under the chairmanship of pro-vice-chancellor Shailendra Kumar Singh, took these decisions and the proposal was sent to vice-chancellor Bimal Kumar.

Yadav said one polling booth would be established for every 500 to 1,000 students. The statutory committee has also fixed the nomination fee for candidates at Rs 250 and the expense limit at Rs 5,000.

College principals would be the returning officers, while economics faculty R.B. Kumar has been made the chief returning officer to ensure fair elections.
