Democracy is set to return to another university in the state. Magadh University has announced election to its students’ union after an interval of 15 years.

The polling would be held on January 30 in all 44 constituent colleges of the university (spread over Gaya, Aurangabad, Nawada, Arwal, Jehanabad, Nalanda and Patna) and the postgraduate departments according to Lyngdoh Committee recommendations.

Registrar D.K. Yadav said: “The students’ union elections would be different from the democratic process at Patna University. Every college in our university would have a central panel with five posts — president, general secretary, vice-president, secretary and treasurer. Students would elect them directly. They, in turn, would elect the central panel at the university level.”

He added that the election would be completed by the first week of February.

Students’ organisations have already begun preparations for the democratic process. The candidates would contest as individuals backed by their organisations, like their counterparts at Patna University.

All India Students’ Federation, which performed well in the Patna University Students’ Union (c) polls held on December 10 after an interval of 29 years, is planning to repeat the performance at Magadh University. AISF member Sushil Kumar said: “The district committee members will meet on January 5. By January 10, we shall release a list of candidate contesting the polls.”

He added that the university had not yet clarified the entire election process.

The students’ wing of the JD(U), which did not perform too well at Pusu election, is pulling up its socks to do better at Magadh University.

JD(U) students’ wing state president Ranjan Kumar said: “We shall field around 40-45 per cent women candidates.”

Both the organisations have opposed the second tyre election to the university central panel by the members of the college panels. They are demanding direct elections.
