The annual senate meeting of Patna University, scheduled for March 5, is likely to be a stormy one with senate members set to raise several issues against the university administration.

The senate is the highest decision making body of the university and includes principals of colleges, department heads, elected teachers, state government representatives, governor's representatives among others as its senate members.

Sources said teachers' promotion would be one of the major issues at the meet. Patna University Teachers' Association general secretary Anil Kumar said: "There are more than 100 teachers in the rank of assistant professors and associate professors. They have been wrongfully denied promotion by the university and are waiting for the same for nearly a decade now."

According to university sources, the varsity administration doesn't want to take up the issue, as promotion of several teachers is sub-judice. Few teachers, who had been denied promotion, had filed petitions in the Patna High Court against the university administration.

Some of the senate members are also going to voice their concern regarding the pending projects that have already been approved by the senate in the past. According to university sources, a resolution was passed for renovation and construction of the dilapidated building of the Ancient History and Archaeology department at Darbhanga House in the last senate meeting. The renovation work has yet not started.

"In the last senate meeting a resolution was passed to construct a separate block for postgraduate students. Even that did not take place," said a Patna College teacher requesting anonymity. "Issues pertaining to students and non-teaching employees would also come up at the senate meeting. Lack of infrastructure and the need to launch new courses would also be raised."

Patna University pro vice-chancellor R.K. Verma said the university administration would discuss issues that the senate members would raise.
