A Darbhanga policeman has set an example of commitment to duty by sending his son, a bootlegger, to jail.

Prabhat Shankar, 55, a sub-inspector posted at the Ashok Paper Mill police station in Darbhanga, was not happy with his unemployed son Indrajeet Kumar, in his thirties, being part of the illegal trade.

He was tipped-off that Indrajeet would get a fresh consignment of liquor ahead of Holi. On Thursday, as soon as the consignment was delivered to Indrajeet, Prabhat informed officials manning the University police station in Darbhanga town, around 145km north of Patna.

The cops swung into action and launched a vehicle checking drive. They caught Indrajeet red-handed with 25 bottles of alcohol made in Haryana.

Asked why he got his son arrested, Prabhat was matter of fact. "I had taken a pledge before seniors that I will neither consume alcohol nor promote its sale in the area falling under the jurisdiction of the police station where I was posted," the sub-inspector said.

University police station house officer Ramesh Dubey said Indrajeet was nabbed from the Kathalwari Road locality of the Darbhanga town.

The police team intercepted Indrajeet, a resident of Kabirchak locality in the town, when he was on way to deliver the consignment to a customer on his motorbike.

Darbhanga additional superintendent of police (ASP) Dilnawaz Ahmad confirmed the arrest.

"On Friday, he (Indrajeet) was produced before the court, which remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days," Ahmad said, adding that the bootlegger was in the trade for long.

During interrogation, Indrajeet is learnt to have told his interrogators that he was getting regular supply of alcohol from a bootlegger in neighbouring Samastipur.

Top police officials in Darbhanga were all praise for Prabhat's dedication to his work and putting duty before family.

"He has set an example with his work and got his own son arrested for smuggling liquor," ASP Dilnawaz said.
