Ranjit’s coaching fee was Rs 4,000 but his father could pay only half. Ranjit had to leave classes midway. “My mother had been admitted to hospital. My brother Ajit, too, had been admitted. I got a photography assignment and got paid Rs 2,100. I could fill up my examination form then,” said Ranjit. He used to take charge of his father’s makeshift stall around after college.

Rohit’s father Ramratan Prasad said: “My wife was hospitalised for many months. He had to take out time to visit his mother. He used to make breakfast, lunch and dinner and it was his duty to deliver food. Rohit hardly used to get time for studies. He used to be exhausted and his mind used to preoccupied with other work,” he said. “I want to be an IITian. I have started preparing for it,” said Rohit with smile.

Naveen used to study with books borrowed from friends. “My father Vijay Kant Lal is an apartment guard. His monthly income is only Rs 2,500 while my mother works as a domestic help. I managed the fee of my coaching owing to scholarship from Kilkari Bihar Bal Bhavan. I want to be a chartered accountant. I want to raise my family’s status,” said Naveen.
Willpower
Avinash Kumar, Gaya College

Avinash’s father Surendra Prasad is a generator operator at district rural development authority office. “We faced problems in depositing his fee. We took loan from relatives and used to pay them later in instalments. In spite of a 8.6 CGPA in Class X, we did not admit him to a big school fearing high fees,” said Prasad.
