Patna: Chief minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday signalled that his government may bring amendments to the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016, in the coming monsoon session of the legislature.
But Nitish also asserted that the changes will not be brought in a hurry and there will be no compromise with the liquor ban.
"We don't just implement the law, but also review it to see whether its provisions are misused. We are bringing amendments as needed. We informed the Supreme Court and sought permission for this. It said that the Legislative Assembly and the government can do so as per the constitutional provisions," he said.
Nitish added that the home and prohibition departments were working on the amendments, and the law department will also be consulted.
"The monsoon session of the legislature is coming (from July 20) and the exercise could be complete by then. However, we will not do anything in a hurry. Necessary provisions will be amended," he said.
Nitish was speaking at a function organised by the police to mark International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. He, however, insisted: "There will be no compromise with prohibition".
He did not elaborate on the provisions to be amended, but acknowledged some of them had been misused for money.
Pointing out that a law will always have violators, Nitish cited the example of Section 302 of the IPC and said that 70 to 80 murders occurred everyday across the country despite provisions of life imprisonment or capital punishment.
