Patna University felicitated 21 college and university teachers on Teachers' Day, marking their service and contribution to the university, at a function in Wheeler Senate Hall.
Among the 21 people teachers honoured were retired and serving faculty members. Chief guest was Assembly Speaker Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, who is also an alumnus of Patna University.
Chaudhary highlighted the role of teachers in a society's development. 'Teaching is still one of the noble professions, but it is sad that brilliant and hardworking students are not turning up for teaching profession,' he said. 'They are more interested in shaping their careers in multinational companies or civil services.'
If the teacher is good and 'has knowledge, they get respect from students.
Vice-chancellor Rash Bihari Prasad Singh, pro-vice-chancellor Dolly Sinha, registrar Ravindra Kumar and large number of university officials, teachers and students were 'present at the ceremony.
Singh spoke about how he joined Patna University around four decades ago as a student and after postgraduation, came back as geography teacher.
Building blocks
Nalanda Open University felicitated teachers Prabhat Chandra (mathematics), Deepak Kumar Sharma (physics) and Randhir Singh (political science) on September 5, Teachers' Day, at the regional centre office in Biscomaun Bhavan.
Vice-chancellor R.K. Sinha said: 'Teachers are the building block of a society as they groom a student not only for a good career but also for his/her personality development.'
Sinha and registrar S.P. Sinha congratulated the teachers for their outstanding performance and dedicated service over the years. Faculty member Bhupendra Kalsi coordinated the programme.

Education minister Krishnanandan Prasad Verma called upon the teaching fraternity to hold shiksha chaupals (education meetings) in villages with all students, teachers and parents to audit the progress of education, during the 69th foundation day celebration of the College of Commerce, Arts and Science.
A review of the education system, in terms of benefits delivered in the remote and rural areas, could be conducted through these chaupals, he said.
Magadh University vice-chancellor Qamar Ahsan observed that there should be close ties between teachers and students for a better academic environment. Colleges might not provide jobs, he added, but they do aid employment. Pro-vice-chancellor K.N. Paswan said a better student could build a better society.
The college students also put their best foot forward - they presented songs and dance acts to celebrate Teachers' Day.
Safe wildlife
Central University of South Bihar's Centre for Mass Communication and Media organised a guest lecture on 'Role of media in wildlife conservation' on Wednesday.
Environmentalist Faiyaz Ahmad Khudsar from the Delhi University's environmental studies department delivered the talk.
Faiyaz's lecture expressed his concern for the degrading environment and wildlife. Talking about human behaviour, he said human beings have a tendency to kill every other living being that come in their way, even without knowing the being's importance in balancing our ecosystem.
'Killing these species, humans are actually heading towards their own destruction,' said Faiyaz. He also pointed at the most burning issue of the day - water pollution and explained to the students the ill- effects of polluting the river Ganga.
'Pollution of the Ganga is not only restricted to water pollution but the entire ecosystem submerged in the river is being adversely affected,' he said, while also touching upon the religious importance of dolphins.
He even various myths embedded in our society regarding several species, and emphasised on a closer relationship between environment experts and media professionals for in-depth reporting.
Faculty members from the media department Kinshuk Pathak and Sujeet Kumar were present at the lecture with the students and other teachers from the central university.
