Patna: Finally, it took a call from Tejashwi Yadav to yet another of his political chachas to set the ball rolling for his father Lalu Prasad's release on parole.

Tejashwi had to dial Jharkhand chief minister Raghubar Das - who has often been at the receiving end of Lalu's diatribe ever since he was convicted in the fodder scam cases by Ranchi courts - to fast-track the parole process.

Setting aside political differences, Raghubar promised Tejashwi he would look into the matter, sources close to the RJD first family confirmed.

Lalu was released on parole for three days on Thursday to attend the wedding of his elder son Tej Pratap on Saturday. Raghubar is among the invitees.

Lalu was expected to be released on Wednesday itself after Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), the hospital in Ranchi where he is being treated under judicial custody, declared him fit to travel.

But later in the evening, news came that Lalu's application had got stuck in the administrative corridors of Ranchi. Panicking, the Lalu family first started calling senior officials of the Jharkhand government, an RJD leader close to Lalu's family told The Telegraph on the condition of anonymity.

"Rabri Devi ji and other family members wanted to know what the problem was since all paperwork had been done. Tejashwiji first tried to contact Jharkhand's principal secretary, home, S.K.G. Rahate, and inspector-general, prison, Harsh Mangla. Neither responded to Tejashwi's repeated phone calls," the leader said.

It was then that Tejashwi decided to call the chief minister. Raghubar responded.

"Tejashwi spoke to the Jharkhand CM for a few minutes. He requested the chief minister to kindly speed up the procedure of Lalu ji's parole so that he could attend the wedding of his son. He also informed Raghubarji that his father is not keeping well and it would be a great help if the Jharkhand government releases him on parole as soon as possible. Tejashwi also said that it would not look nice if the head of the family was not around at the wedding of his elder son," said the RJD leader.

Raghubar, the RJD leader said, assured Tejashwi that he would personally look into the matter.

Personal ties between politicians have often risen above their differences.

For example, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the wedding of Lalu's youngest daughter Raj Lakshmi to Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's grand nephew Tej Pratap Singh Yadav in New Delhi in February 2015.

More recently, Lalu had attended the wedding of bitter rival Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi's son Utkarsh Tathagat. Both Sushil Modi and chief minister Nitish Kumar, whom Tejashwi addresses as chacha, are expected to attend Saturday's wedding.

Tej Pratap will tie the knot with Aishwarya Rai, the daughter of RJD MLA and former minister Chandrika Rai.
