Chhapra, Jan. 20: Jai Prakash University is mired in controversy but the officials are not paying much attention.
The meeting of the university senate, scheduled today, has been stayed by the order of the chancellor in the light of an earlier order that outgoing vice-chancellors cannot take policy-making decisions.
JP University Teachers’ Association members have made launched a scathing attack on vice-chancellor R.P. Sharma, accusing him of embezzling Rs 17 lakh. Prabhunath Singh, the general secretary of the teacher’s association, sent a fax to Governor Devanand Konwar, alleging that the vice-chancellor had been withdrawing money illegally from the university’s account.
“The vice-chancellor’s tenure expires on January 25. Despite restrictions by the governor and the state government, he has been withdrawing money from the university’s account,” said Prabhunath.
Prabhunath also said three days ago, Rs 3 lakh was withdrawn for buying furniture and yesterday Rs 16 lakh was withdrawn. The V-C also paid Rs 1 lakh as income tax from these funds. Another cheque of Rs 3 lakh was issued in the name of the finance officer yesterday. Prabhunath added that the registrar and the finance officer of the university are hand-in-glove with the V-C.
Meanwhile, Ravi Prakash Bablu, a reader at Ganga Singh College, said the V-C had embezzled funds from his salary. Bablu said the benefits of the Sixth Pay Commission had to be given to all the teachers but JP University had not yet implemented it. But the vice-chancellor had fixed his salary according to the Sixth Pay Commission and withdrawn the excess money, said Bablu.
