Mohammad Javed, one of the suspects in Siwan journalist Rajdev Ranjan's murder, surrendered before a Siwan court on Friday, a day after the CBI moved the court seeking transfer of the case's trial in the special CBI court in Muzaffarpur.
Javed, also called Javed Ali, had been on the run since his name figured in the murder of Ranjan, the Siwan bureau chief of Hindi daily Hindustan, on May 13. The CBI, which started a probe last month, had earlier raided Javed's Shukla Toli residence in Siwan on September 22 but he was not found.
Javed, 26, who was involved in real estate business, is considered close to Siwan don-turned-politician Mohammad Shahabuddin. He was seen accompanying Shahabuddin, the four-term former MP, during his journey from Bhagalpur to Siwan after his release on bail on September 10. His photograph with RJD boss Lalu Prasad had also gone viral on social media. Javed, however, pleaded innocence and said he was ready to face inquiry by any investigating agency.
"I have written to the deputy inspector-general, Saran range and the superintendent of police of Siwan to ascertain my role in the case," he told reporters outside the Siwan court soon after his surrender.
The chief judicial magistrate (CJM) of Siwan, Arvind Kumar Singh, forwarded Javed to the district jail for two weeks. The CBI is likely to take Javed on remand for interrogation in the case.
Mohammad Kaif alias Bunty, another suspect in the case, had surrendered before the court on September 26.
The CBI yesterday requested the special CBI court to allow the investigating agency to conduct a polygraph test on Kaif.
