Patna, Sept. 15: Decorative pots have always caught the eyes of people and for those with an artistic bent of mind, nothing is more fulfilling than putting talents to use.

The fashion designing department of Patna Women’s College today organised a pot-painting competition for students from various departments.

Around 30 students took part in the competition and worked on themes, including Madhubani painting, 3D effect with the use of ceramic, Warli painting and others. The contestants also used fabric and acrylic colours for durability.

Faculty member, fashion designing department, Priyanka Singh said: “Every month, the department organises two to three competitions. Last month, we had organised mehndi and rakhi-making competition. This time, as Diwali is approaching, it is the turn for pot-painting. The pots, which can later be used to decorate homes, give the students a chance to brush up their creative talents.”

Sunita Kumari, a psychology student, who took part in the competition, said: “I have not selected any particular design but I am using various elements, including mirrors, colourful beads and colours. I hope a beautiful design emerges.”

Niketa, another participant from the political science department, said: “I chose oceans as my theme. So, I am using blue and white. The colour blue represents coolness while white represents peace. I have also tried to show the waves of the ocean with the use of Plaster of Paris, which gives the pot a 3D effect. I will also use flowers to give a final touch to my pot.”

The winner of the pot-painting competition, Ritu, from the department of fashion designing, also had 3D as her desired theme. She said: “I chose black and golden colours for my 3D theme. It’s amazing to have won the first prize.”

The second prize also went to the fashion designing department with Priyanka bagging the honours with Madhubani painting theme.

Shashi Prabha, an economics student, said: “I have made flowers and leaves from putty and then pasted them on the pot for a floral design. I have also used small decorative bells to design the pot.”

All the contestants were awarded participation certificate. Tanuja Kishore, head of department, fashion designing, said: “We organised this competition for the whole college to give the students an opportunity to showcase their imagination and creativity. Such competitions also give students a break from their routine life.”
