The past week in the city's colleges was a time of recollection, recognition and reunion.
A faculty member from the Chandragupt Institute of Management, Patna (CIMP), was invited to a prestigious conference on information systems in the US, while final-year students of St Xavier's College of Management and Technology returned to their campus after an experience in the professional world for a month and so. Students of Patna Women's College looked back into the story of the Lady of Mount Carmel while St Xavier's College held an orientation session of would-be teachers.
Carmel feast
Patna Women's College organised a series of cultural events on Friday, a day ahead of the Mount Carmel Feast.
The programme started with a prayer dance followed by a PowerPoint presentation on the Lady of Mount Carmel - the story talks of her struggle during a drought and how she helped the people overcome the calamity. Students performed a skit presenting the origin of Carmelites and history of Mount Carmel. A classical dance expressing the joy of Mother Mary and a dance to show gratitude bagged the performers thunderous applause.
Principal Sister Marie Jessie spoke on the day's significance and asked the students to adopt qualities of courage and humility. She thanked the student cabinet members for making the programme a success.
Isha Singh, a first-year arts student, said she loved the skit as it encouraged a positive attitude in life.
New tutors
St Xavier's College of Education organised a two-day orientation programme for 100 new candidates. The session concluded on Saturday.
After a prayer service, faculty member Preeti Sinha gave a presentation on "The educational scenario of India and Bihar and role of the teacher".
She said the word Bihar had come from "Vihar", meaning centre of knowledge. She explained the importance of a teacher's role and a learner-centred approach. "In this age of technology, the teacher should be updated and have a knowledge of his/her surroundings," said Sinha.
Father Victor Osta, assistant faculty member in the BEd department, said: "All the sessions were aimed at making future teachers aware of their responsibilities towards the society and their role as a teacher."
Purnima Kumari, one of the first-year students, said she found all the faculty members cooperative and helpful.
Data talk in US
CIMP's information system management department faculty Kalyan Agrawal has been invited to present his research paper on information system at the 22nd Americas Conference on Information Systems in San Diego from August 11-14.
Experts from Austria, Germany, Canada among others will attend the four-day conference. Kalyan will present a research paper on "Business value creation through big data analytics".
"This conference is considered a leading event for presenting the broadest variety of research done by academics," said Kalyan. "Every year, papers and panel presentations are selected from over 700 submissions. The proceedings find place in the permanent collections of libraries across the world."
"My research paper talks about the impact of big data analytics - analysis of information taken from various sources - on the creation of business value through an integrated model. Big data analytics is transforming businesses through its capability of combining data from several sources, generating useful business value for the industry," added Kalyan, the co-ordinator of CIMP's quality improvement cell.
