Patna: A college student died on Thursday afternoon after she apparently jumped into the Ganga at Kangan Ghat. Many people saw Nisha Kumari (20) jump but none came forward to rescue her as the river is swollen with rains.
"It was around 12.15pm when I along with some of my friends were at the ghat. I saw a girl in her early twenties walking on the cemented ghat," said Amit Agarwal, an eyewitness. "Minutes later, I heard people shouting that someone had jumped into the river. Then I saw the same girl drowning."
Nisha was screaming but no one had the courage to help her. Personnel from the local Chowk police station reached the spot within 15 minutes. The cops and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel launched rescue operations that drew a blank.
"The SDRF is carrying out rescue operations but till Thursday evening the body had not been fished out," said Chowk police station house officer Mitesh Kumar.
Nisha's maternal uncle Rajeev Kumar said she had called her brother Vikash and told him she was going to commit suicide. Vikash and his mother were in the SBI Chowk Bazar branch then. Vikash rushed to Kangan Ghat and Nisha's identity was confirmed when he saw the photographs of the incident clicked by photographers at the spot.
Rajeev said: "Nisha was not having any problem; she was not depressed."
Nisha, the eldest daughter of farmer Naresh Mahto, was a commerce student at the College of Commerce, Arts and Science.
She lived in the Ranipur area of Patna City and used to come to Chowk Bazar for coaching. On Thursday morning too, she had left the house saying she was going for tuitions.
